A wing of a sixteenth-century palazzo in central Rome holds this small hotel, which stands directly against the garden of Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. The entrance is on a quiet lane a short walk from Via del Corso, and the house is easy to pass without noticing it at all. Rooms occupy former service floors of the older building, and several of them look over the garden wall.

Public areas are limited and domestic in scale: a ground-floor sitting room, a small bar, and a restaurant that opens towards the garden side. Ceilings and floors from the older building have been kept in places, and newer work is left visible rather than disguised. Circulation runs through narrow stairs and passages inherited from the palazzo plan.

Write ahead if the garden outlook matters, since only part of the house faces that way. It is also worth asking which hours the restaurant and the bar keep, and whether the ground-floor sitting room stays open to guests through the day.

Berlin, Germany

Behind a plain street wall in Charlottenburg stand a former courthouse and a former women’s prison, converted room by room into a hotel. The complex dates from the late nineteenth century and stood empty for years before the work began. Cell walls were opened, windows enlarged, and the yard between the two buildings replanted, so the plan of the old institution is still legible.

The two buildings hold guest rooms, a restaurant and a hall used for readings and other events. Original brickwork, iron stairs and vaulted corridors were retained where that was possible, and new inserts are made in a different material so the difference reads. The planted courtyard between the buildings is open to guests.

Ask in advance about the hall, which is used for events and is not open at all times. Room types vary a good deal because they follow the old structure, so it is worth describing what you need rather than assuming a standard plan.

Seen from outside the house is unremarkable, and the work is all inside, in the colour, joinery and fabric chosen floor by floor.

Common parts are compact: a reception, a sitting area with a fireplace, a small bar, and a lower-floor room with a pool and a fitness area. Guest rooms are arranged over several storeys around a single stair and lift core. Materials repeat between rooms, which gives the house a consistent look without repeating one plan.

Check the opening hours of the lower-floor rooms before arriving, since they are often shorter than the rest of the house. If quiet matters, ask which rooms face the street and which face the inner court, because the difference is noticeable.

In Higienópolis, a residential district of apartment blocks and older houses, this hotel occupies a mansion from the early part of the last century. The building was a family house before it took guests, and the conversion kept the domestic plan: a stair hall, connected reception rooms, and bedrooms opening off a landing. A garden sits behind the house.

Guests use a ground floor of linked rooms rather than one large lobby, with seating, a bar and space for breakfast. Tiles, joinery and plasterwork from the original house survive in several of those rooms. Work by Brazilian designers and makers is placed through the interior, and it is labelled rather than left anonymous.

Because the house is small, it is sensible to write ahead about arrival times and about which rooms open towards the garden. Ask as well whether the ground-floor rooms are given over to private use on any of the dates you have in mind.

A loggia looks over the courtyard. Where painted decoration survives it is left as the main event, and furnishing is kept low and simple.

Ask which of the painted rooms are open to guests, since some are held back for private use. It is also worth confirming restaurant hours and whether the loggia can be used in the season when you travel.

A fortified house of thirteenth-century origin north-west of Lyon, Château de Bagnols stands within a moat and a park of mature planting. The building was restored over several years before it opened to guests, and the medieval structure, the later additions and the painted decoration all remain readable.

Public rooms include a great hall with a wide fireplace, smaller sitting rooms, a restaurant and terraces facing the park. Guest rooms are in the main house and in outbuildings within the walls, and there is a pool in the grounds. Floors, beams and wall paintings were conserved rather than replaced, so surfaces differ from room to room.

The house stands in open country, so ask about transfer arrangements and about the seasons in which the restaurant and the grounds are fully open. Confirm as well whether the estate is taken for private hire on any of your dates.
